Creating a world that can not exist allows us explore questions about relationships and how much they are a product of “true love” or simply inertia/commitment. What happens when former lovers forget each other and meet again? Would another relationship suggest fate? The film offers ambiguous answers to the matters of the heart but succeeds in stimulating imagination and sparking debate.

As the best biopic of the decade, “Capote” does not get bogged down in the details about childhood or later years. Instead, it focuses on a single event in the man’s life, probably the most important event. Because the film slows and soaks in the totality of the murders and their aftermath, we’re able to explore Capote deeper and get a true understanding of what this case meant to the man.

It’s taken 15 years for Quentin Tarantino to get serious about his work again. Inglourious Basterds is well worth that wait. His WWII fairytale is full of the blood and witty dialogue viewers expect from his movies, but it also makes profound statements about the ambiguous nature of good and evil/right and wrong in war.

The greatest comic book film of all-time is this genre-exploding trek to the moral never-neverland of Gotham City where heroes are villains and villains bend the will of the masses. Forever identified by Heath Ledger’s Joker, the film offers so much more, including the perfectly tenured performance of Bruce Wayne by Bale and the brooding, inescapable darkness of Nolan’s direction.

In a decade where numerous films preached about war, Munich is more like a conversation Spielberg wants to have with his viewers. Unlike his peers, Spielberg doesn’t demonize “our guys” to consider the other side. He also doesn’t whitewash the crimes of our “enemy”. Because he refrains from propagandizing the facts, I’m forced to at least consider his thesis, even if I can’t fully embrace it.

The film is in Spanish and it says Maria is from Colombia, but when I watch this tale of a young girl caught up in the drug culture, I only see America and similar stories repeated in our biggest cities and smallest towns.

I can’t say this movie pushes film limits or speaks to something about the human condition; I just love it. It is three great films in one (a cute con movie, with all kinds of twists and turns; a Nicholson-like view at a man with OCD; and a tale of a father bonding with the teenage daughter he never knew). With the precision of a great Seinfeld episode, all three tales magically come together.

Equal parts train wreck and National Geographic special. Viewers of the tale of Timothy Treadwell can hate, pity and be in awe of the man all the same time. Like with Man on Wire, this film shows us that the best documentaries are about strange folks with big dreams.

Unflinching and unaltered look at the events of 9/11. Although nearly perfectly crafted, the film lacks a voice and belongs more on The History Channel than on the big screen.
