![]() | Pan's Labyrinth
Buy new: $7.49 / Used from: $1.73 Pan's Labyrinth gives us a story from our world and a tale from our dreams, both with brave heroes and terrifying villains. That the film doesn't distinguish between the two stories or favor one over the other is the magic. Just like our hero, viewers who believe in the fairytale are just as convinced as to the existence of the Labyrinth's fawn as they are of the guerillas.

![]() | Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $7.49 / Used from: $1.86 Creating a world that can not exist allows us explore questions about relationships and how much they are a product of true love or simply inertia/commitment. What happens when former lovers forget each other and meet again? Would another relationship suggest fate? The film offers ambiguous answers to the matters of the heart but succeeds in stimulating imagination and sparking debate.

![]() | The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.63 The most aesthetically pleasing film Ive ever seen. Hundreds of frames from this film could be hung in museums next to the work of contemporary photographers. Yes, its a bit long and would benefit from a tidier edit, but the gorgeous visuals, somber score and a voiceover narration that rivals anything heard in Shawshank are as close to cinematic perfection as youll ever see.

![]() | Capote
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $0.01 As the best biopic of the decade, Capote does not get bogged down in the details about childhood or later years. Instead, it focuses on a single event in the mans life, probably the most important event. Because the film slows and soaks in the totality of the murders and their aftermath, were able to explore Capote deeper and get a true understanding of what this case meant to the man.

![]() | Million Dollar Baby [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $6.71 Million Dollar baby is part morality play and part love letter to the sweet science of prizefighting. With much of the credit owed to Paul Haggis script, Eastwoods irresistible story of a female boxer distracts viewers with poetic prose praising both the young fighter and the magic of boxing, all while the film loads up for a knockout punch that will floor any audience.
|
![]() | Inglourious Basterds (2-Disc Special Edition) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $12.33 Its taken 15 years for Quentin Tarantino to get serious about his work again. Inglourious Basterds is well worth that wait. His WWII fairytale is full of the blood and witty dialogue viewers expect from his movies, but it also makes profound statements about the ambiguous nature of good and evil/right and wrong in war.
|
![]() | Man on Wire
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.59 The decades best documentary is also its greatest romance with this tale of a man and his love affair with two buildings. Refreshing that in a decade where most documentaries fixed their cannons on the same tired, right-wing targets, Man on Wire gives us those gifts that the genre was meant to deliver: truth, beauty and inspiration, all found in one mans poetry in the sky.
|
![]() | The Dark Knight (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $9.19 The greatest comic book film of all-time is this genre-exploding trek to the moral never-neverland of Gotham City where heroes are villains and villains bend the will of the masses. Forever identified by Heath Ledgers Joker, the film offers so much more, including the perfectly tenured performance of Bruce Wayne by Bale and the brooding, inescapable darkness of Nolans direction.
|
![]() | Shrek (Full Screen Single Disc Edition)
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $2.75 The best animated film of the decade achieves the difficult combination of wielding a smartass tone surrounded by a tender heart. Most are attracted to Ogres tale by the slick, spot-on spoofs of fairytales from yesteryear, but the witty, sarcastic climate dissolves into a traditional story of romance, bravery and friendship, all wrapped around a 21st century lesson in beauty and appearance.
|
![]() | Munich (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $5.98 / Used from: $0.01 In a decade where numerous films preached about war, Munich is more like a conversation Spielberg wants to have with his viewers. Unlike his peers, Spielberg doesnt demonize our guys to consider the other side. He also doesnt whitewash the crimes of our enemy. Because he refrains from propagandizing the facts, Im forced to at least consider his thesis, even if I cant fully embrace it.
|
![]() | There Will Be Blood
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.50 The most ambitious film of the decade, There Will be Blood wants to be Chinatown and it wants to be The Treasure of the Sierra Madras. It just falls a big short. A tidier script that doesnt lose focus by trying to bag a second victim (religion) to go along with its primary trophy (capitalist greed) could have produced one of the best films of all-time.
|
![]() | Maria Full of Grace
Buy new: $5.49 / Used from: $1.74 The film is in Spanish and it says Maria is from Colombia, but when I watch this tale of a young girl caught up in the drug culture, I only see America and similar stories repeated in our biggest cities and smallest towns.
|
![]() | No Country for Old Men
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.35 An aging lawmans reluctant acceptances of his powerlessness in the face of evil echoes through No Country. As bodies pile up under his nose, the sheriff can barely hold on, as evil incarnate takes him on the same edge-of-your-seat ride as the audience. This nihilistic message comes tethered to an unforgettable story with all the appealing qualities of horror, chase and action genres.
|
![]() | Matchstick Men (Widescreen Edition) (Snap Case)
Buy used from: $0.01 I cant say this movie pushes film limits or speaks to something about the human condition; I just love it. It is three great films in one (a cute con movie, with all kinds of twists and turns; a Nicholson-like view at a man with OCD; and a tale of a father bonding with the teenage daughter he never knew). With the precision of a great Seinfeld episode, all three tales magically come together.
|
![]() | Doubt
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.79 The most intense drama of the decade. After seeing it a few years ago, I am now ready to say for sure that he did it.
Or did he.
Yes, he did.
Wait, I take that back.
Forget what I said. He is innocent.
Or is he?
|
![]() | Grizzly Man
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $2.04 Equal parts train wreck and National Geographic special. Viewers of the tale of Timothy Treadwell can hate, pity and be in awe of the man all the same time. Like with Man on Wire, this film shows us that the best documentaries are about strange folks with big dreams.
|
![]() | Whale Rider
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.88 The best family film of the decade and a good lesson to James Cameron about how to make a pro-nature/anti-imperialism film without resorting to cliché plots and one dimensional characters.
|
![]() | United 93 (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $0.01 Unflinching and unaltered look at the events of 9/11. Although nearly perfectly crafted, the film lacks a voice and belongs more on The History Channel than on the big screen.
|
![]() | The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy (Theatrical Editions + Digital Copy) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $63.99 / Used from: $39.98 Not exactly my fancy, but a monumental accomplishment nonetheless.
