Review
This recording brings Viktoria Mullova together with John Eliot Gardiner and his Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique for a programme which couples two of the greatest violin concertos in the repertory: those by Beethoven and Mendelssohn.

Beethoven s Violin Concerto is his only concerto for a solo string instrument and is one of the cornerstones of the violin repertory. It is conceived on a huge scale and must have presented an enormous challenge to the violinist who first performed the work on 23 December 1806, Franz Clement, who essentially had to play the work at sight.

Mendelssohn was a violinist himself and the E minor Concerto is an integral part of the violin repertory. The concerto was given its first performance on 13 March 1845 when Ferdinand David was soloist. Mendelssohn had agonised over minute details of the work with David yet the final result is one of a piece of seeming great spontaneity and youthful freshness. The concerto was immediately recognised as a masterpiece and has remained so ever since.

Disc plays fine, the review below is misleading.
I bought several titles by this company and wanted to add this recording to my collection. After reading review below I contacted the label owner via Blu ray forum about compatibility. Just buy this titles directly from Amazon to be sure you got updated version. But even if you got an older copy they will replace it free of charge.

new generation of multichannel audio
I'd take these performances with me to test audio equipment any day, and the fact that they are equally fine interpretively is just the icing on the cake. Indeed, so fine do they sound that this new multichannel format merely serves to offer a listening experience of a slightly "different" rather than "better" order. All discussions of aesthetics aside, you simply won't find more intelligent or musical recorder playing anywhere, and if you have Blu-ray player this release will be essential listening. In sum, this is an outstanding recording, strongly recommended, especially to those who want to experience the power of the new generation of multichannel audio.

has to be heard to be believed

Once the Beethoven really gets under way - it is, after all, a big piece - it generates a compelling intensity, and the solo line is nicely characterised, not least in the fluent music of the slow movement. Millova plays her own cadenzas, which are very much in keeping with the nature of her performance, which brings satisfaction if it does not uplift the soul.

The Mendelssohn Concerto starts beatifully before developing a more dramatic view. Mullova phrasing of the glorious tune with which Mendelssohn begins have the natural flow the music needs, and the same might be said of the slow movement too. However, there are many compensations, particularly in the clear articulation of the faster music. Although one would not hesitate to recommend this as a first choice recording, the performances do have many insights and abundant interest.

Meanwhile, the DTS-HD MA sound conveys a true sense of both height and depth such that you hear and "feel" the hall, the instruments seem realistically separated in "real space", string attacks are more sharply delineated. This recording illuminates subtle acoustic and timbral details to the extent that the listening experience is just that much more engaging and vibrant.
